Dave York writes:
Sadly my mother, Thelma York, passed away at home at the age of 96 on 12 July. As you may know, Thelma was one of the founding members - first of the Midland Bohemians in 1948 and later the Ratae Road Club in 1950.
She supported her husband Jim York in his role as the first club secretary and worked tirelessly dealing with administration for the club (her training as a shorthand typist being put to good use). Thelma typed out the start sheets and results sheets for the Ratae cycle events eg time trials. She also organised the catering for the events at the club.
Although never a racer, she was a keen cyclist and did long distances to the coast and also cycled in many of the club runs.
She maintained her interest in the club right to the end - and she was very proud of her part in its genesis and of club's continuing success .
I am attaching 4 photos which may be of interest:
Main picture: Thelma when she borrowed her father's bike to cycle to Matlock (Jim got "told off" by her parents for allowing her to ride in shorts).
