Following a couple of recent accidents to club members the committee considered last night whether it was time to make the wearing of helmets compulsory in all forms of club riding. Helmets have been mandatory for some time in competitive riding but, even though spills are rare in non-competitive events, the consequences of a bare skull hitting the tarmac can be traumatic and have longer-term after effects. In addition, having to deal with a rider who has suffered a head injury puts a great responsibility on his/her fellow riders.
We didn't think that this proposal would be controversial and after some discussion it was unanimously agreed, coming into effect from 1 January 2023.
After this date any rider turning up to a club ride without an EN Certified helmet, either as member or a guest, will not be allowed to ride with us.
